CONTRA COSTA COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT

The Contra Costa Community College District was established by popular vote on December 14, 1948. The District's boundaries are approximately those of Contra Costa County, making it one of the largest college districts in California. The district serves and is supported by approximately 775,480 Contra Costa County residents. The district consists of three colleges: Contra Costa College in San Pablo, Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, and Los Medanos in Pittsburgh.

 

LOS MEDANOS COLLEGE

Los Medanos College derived its name from Rancho Los Medanos, which was among the last of the huge land grants made by the Mexican government during its sovereignty over California from 1821 to 1846. Loosely translated from Spanish, Los Medanos means "the sand dunes." Los Medanos College, located in Pittsburgh on a 120-acre site near the boundary between Pittsburg and Antioch, opened its doors for the first time in the spring of 1974. Students arrived from numerous Contra Costa County high schools including Liberty Union, Antioch, Pittsburg, Pacifica, Clayton Valley, and Concord. Los Medanos, however, attracted more than recent high school graduates. The college drew large numbers of adults of all ages from across the county, particularly from the most eastern sector.

Like Diablo Valley and Contra Costa Colleges, Los Medanos offers coursework for those seeking AA degrees as well as for those students intending to transfer to the CSU or UC system and those individuals looking to take classes now and then.

Money for Education: The Los Medanos College Foundation is a nonprofit charitable organization that raises money for the college to meet the educational needs of East County. DIABLO VALLEY COLLEGE

Civic leaders who recognized the critical role that education would play in the future of their community established Diablo Valley College (DVC). They wanted to ensure that all students in central Contra Costa would have access to a high quality, affordable college education. Today DVC has developed into one of California's most successful transfer institutions, sending nearly 2,000 students each year to highly rated colleges and universities. At the same time, DVC has created an array of excellent occupational programs that prepare students for direct entry into the workforce.

Through the years, the college has expanded its programs and services to respond to evolving community needs. An extensive campus improvement project is underway to bring the college's facilities up-to-date. Through that effort, combined with an upgraded technology infrastructure, DVC is creating a more sophisticated learning environment to better support the work of the faculty and enhance student learning.

CONTRA COSTA COLLEGE

Contra Costa College opened its doors in 1950 as West Contra Costa Junior College. In 1953 Contra Costa College acquired the land for its new campus and classes began just three years later in 1956. The college went through the same events that impacted institutions of higher learning across the US: the postwar student population, the 60's, and Kent State, as well as events particular to California such as the effect of Proposition 13 on education and the Farm Workers cause. With more than fifty years of experience, Contra Costa College stands ready to deliver a broad range of courses to the student seeking new skills, an associate arts degree, or simply to explore one of the many classes offered. SAN JOAQUIN DELTA COLLEGE

San Joaquin Delta College, a public two-year community college was established in 1963 following the reorganization of Stockton Junior College. Since 1935, Stockton Junior College and now San Joaquin Delta College have been serving the educational needs of California's great San Joaquin Valley.

The main campus was built in the early 1970's on a 165 acre site in Stockton, California. It has been divided into five main instructional centers, each designed with a central courtyard and study lounge. In addition to the main campus, the college operates a 157 acre farm laboratory in Manteca and an 83 acre natural habitat reserve near Mountain Ranch in the Mother Lode. Over 17,000 full and part-time students attend Delta College and are enrolled in various academic, technical, and vocational programs.

San Joaquin Delta College is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and is approved by the State Board of Registered Nursing, the State Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technician Examiners, the National League of Nursing, The California State Department of Education, the University of California, the California State University, the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, and the California Commission on peace Officer Standard and Training.
