CODE FOR COMMUNITY PRIDE

The Community Policing Program is not the only opportunity for community service. The City of Oakley has designed the Community Service Program to educate residents and business owners about municipal codes. Building code, weed and trash abatement code, and abandoned vehicle code information will be part of the Community Service Program curriculum. In addition to providing code enforcement education, the Community Service Program is a resource for residents and businesses, providing information on programs and services offered to Oakley residents by other agencies. You can learn where to dispose of household hazardous waste such as paint and batteries, where to donate old cars, and how to conserve energy. The Community Service Program also organizes Community Cleanup days. The Community Service Program is code for community pride.

Inoperative vehicles

City Ordinance No. 16-00 defines an "Inoperative vehicle" as any vehicle that, either legally or structurally, cannot be driven on public street without (1) installing a missing part, (2) replacement of defective part or (3) registration and licensing. Inoperative vehicels on the street are handled through the Police Department. Inoperable vehicles on private property that are publicly visible are handled through the Community Services Program.

Weeds and Trash

Ordinance No. 11-00 addresses the accumulation of both weeds and trash, or refuse. "Refuse" means nonputrescible solid consisting of both combustible and noncombustible wastes, including but not limited to paper, wrappings, cardboard, tin cans, yard clippings, leaves, wood, dry grass, bedding, crockery, and similar materials. Weeds (as defined by California Government Code Sec. 39561.5(e)) means dry grass, stubble, brush, litter, or other flammable material that endangers the public safety by creating a fire hazard.

The Community Services Program is also pro-actively trying to educate residents and business about the need for building and safety codes, how to avoid violations, and resources available to the community regarding issues such as disposing of household hazardous waste, keeping our water clean and safe, et cetera.

Additionally, the Community Services Program will also organize groups of volunteers for Community Cleanup days along Main Street.
