Oakley Police Department Press Release and Update 10.19.2022

UPDATED INFORMATION RELEASE

This is an update to the earlier incident involving a man with a gun at the Vintage Elementary School. As previously mentioned at 12:29 PM the Oakley Police Department received a call of a man with a gun near the front office of Vintage Elementary School. Our first officer arrived onscene within 2 minutes of the original call and our supervisor arrived a few seconds later. Within five minutes we had seven of our officers onscene to secure the area, facilitate keeping the school children safe and initiate our investigation- keeping the children safe was, and will always be, our primary goal in a situation like this.

So far our investigation has yielded this WAS NOT an incident of somebody coming to the school to intentionally inflict harm on the children. This act is however, not tolerable in any way shape or form and we do realize there was a risk to the children and all of the parents who were there to pick the children up. Because of this risk we fully supported the decision of the school administration, and staff, to lock the school down- it was the appropriate action to take.

Within a couple of minutes our officers determined an adult male was pistol whipped while he waited to pick his children up. The attacker fled as soon as this assault occurred. Once our officers felt confident the attacker fled the area they coordinated with school staff to get the children to their waiting parents so they could be reunited and get home together.

Our investigation has revealed this incident likely spawned from a domestic relationship and child custody issue where a third party was introduced into the conflict. Our victim did not recognize the attacker and we continue to investigate the possible identity of the attacker. The children of the victim will not be attending school for the next few days until best, or alternative, arrangements can be made.

The Oakley Police Department is still reviewing, and collecting video and digital evidence. We have released an image captured at the intersection of Vintage Parkway and Rutherford Lane. We believe our attacker is captured in this image and as can be seen he is wearing latex gloves just as it had been initially reported.

If anybody has information related to any aspect of this case they are asked to call the Oakley Police Department at 925-625-8060.

Original Press Release

On 10-19-22 at 12:29 PM the Oakley Police Department received a call of a man with a gun near the front office of Vintage Elementary School. The man with the gun had reportedly just slapped somebody else and ran away. The Oakley Police Department flooded the area with our officers and we continue to remain onscene investigating. The officers who are onscene have determined the man with the gun is no longer at the school and our officers are providing security for the normally scheduled school dropoff time. The suspect has been described as a black male adult, 40 years old, wearing a hat, black hoodie, black pants and blue latex gloves.

This is an evolving investigation and we will provide updates as we can.
