The Contra Costa County Library operates the library in Oakley. Established in 1913, the Oakley Library is one of the oldest Contra Costa County libraries. Over the years, the library has been housed in several locations and currently shares space with Freedom High School. The County Library takes great pride in serving the community and offers computers, free Wi-Fi access, and a variety of materials that support the educational and entertainment needs of the community. Be sure to check out the children’s, teen, and adult programs, provided at no cost, thanks to the Friends of the Oakley Library.
The Oakley Library’s current location inside Freedom High School was always meant to be temporary, and our community of 45,000 residents outgrew the 3,000 square foot facility years ago. A new, larger library would allow for more operating hours, more services and more community events. A new location was supposed to be found by 2004. Now 20 years later, we have finally found the library a potential new home at the Oakley Civic Center Plaza! The City is in the process of bringing a new Library and Community Center to the residents of Oakley; the Community Center will be used for community groups like the Oakley Senior Citizens and the Veterans of Oakley.
The City of Oakley is committed to this project, and community members and stakeholders, including the Friends of the Oakley Library, are working to raise the funding needed to make this vision for our community a reality. Visit the Friends of the Oakley Library page for more information and to make a donation to help bring this much needed facility to our deserving community.
